We need to do better

A recent article from NZ's The Post criticised the Department of Internal Affairs for investing approximately $60k (yes, the article had the wrong amount) in leadership development through the "Dare to Lead" program, based on the research of renowned expert Brené Brown.

Many of the best leaders I have had the pleasure of working with have been fierce proponents of the research-backed approach of Brené Brown. Despite this, the article dismissed these efforts as "frivolous days out" and "courage building courses".

Let’s take a step back and look at the facts.

Leadership development programs like Dare to Lead are designed to build critical skills, foster engagement, improve retention, and attract top-tier talent. These outcomes are not “nice-to-haves” – they are essential.

The truth is, companies that undervalue leadership development are missing out. Strong leaders drive culture, strategy, and results. Without investing in their growth, organizations risk being left behind.

It’s time to shift the narrative. Leadership development isn’t just an expense – it’s an investment in the future success of our organisations and communities. A recent study by New Level Work found that leadership development had an average ROI of 7:1, primarily through increasing sales / revenue and decreasing employee turnover.

Let’s start recognizing its worth.
